Three billion miles of thrumming space
seven years for the probe to arrive,
send back vistas
of strange mountains of ice, of flat bleak plains.
Those five moons
named after characters of Greek mythology
circle, circle, each in its orbit;
while their names trip from our tongues like grey pearls–
Hydra, Kerberos, Nix, Styx , Charon..
dark moons in thrall to the pull of Pluto,
god of the Underworld,
Dwarf Planet at the further edge
of Earth’s solar system.
Our celestial scientists have reached out to Mars, to Venus,
and far, far beyond.
Bound to our own small planet,
we search, we wonder, we plan and fantasize our escape
while our gracious world burns and turns,
turns and burns in the acids of our beliefs, our conflicts
and our poverty of cognizance.
as we seek beyond our reality,
